Goodreads reading challenge

I'm one of those people that suffers greatly from decision paralysis. So when I go to a library or bookstore and there are so many books I get very overwhelmed and have no idea what I'm doing. So when I started working on my goal of utilizing the library more (especially the digital catalog) I turned to my very neglected Goodreads account. To try to get some organization going. And since I was already there I might as well do the reading challenge.

Since it is almost the end of the year, and I have exceeded my reading goal I thought I would do a rec list.
Everything I've read (or reread) this year that I rated 4 or 5 stars.
Under a Cut because there's a lot of them. )
If you wanna be friends on Goodreads you can find me here. And if you have any questions about books mentioned on this post or that I have shelved on Goodreads don't hesitate to ask!

So when do Eliot and Quentin hook up?

Last night after my gaming session I had a pretty bad headache and so even though my plan for the night had been to make progress in ffx I decided to do something that required slightly less brain power.
So, I started watching The Magicians. The last episode I watched ended with them walking through the portal from Antarctica Brakebill's to regular Brakebill's. So..I got kinda far for 1 night, but I'm nowhere near caught up. Anyways...
I love Eliot and Margo. Though they also make me kind of sad. Because, for the first 2 or 3 episodes I was reading them as a couple in an open relationship, and then I realized that I was probably supposed to be reading them as a mean girl and her gbf. Which is a bummer. For me. Personally.
I'm also not a super huge fan of the Alice/Quentin development. I'm not super against it or anything I just think it's kind of boring.
Right now I like Marina (as a villain) but she hurts Kady (who is 110% my girl) she's dead to me.
Also. I love Penny.
I don't have super intelligent or well thought opinions at this point. But it's a fun show and I really like it!

And. My brain keeps trying to make an MCU crossover happening. Something along the lines of Dr. Strange being a former (expelled) student that regains his memories after IW is all wrapped up and then needs extra hands for a spell or something ???? Idk. It'll get there

Catch-up

So. This week was a pretty busy week for me. Sat-Tues I had work. It's the busy season for my job but I was still able to finish 4 books! Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda & Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli and Warcross & Wildcard by Marie Lu. I have lots of feeling about them which I'm not going to clutter this post with but if anyone is interested in talking about them I can make a post (or 2) later.
Yesterday would have normally been a hang out on the internet day for me. But it was the first session of a new Pathfinder campaign. And, normally the dm that's doing this campaign hosts at his house so I didn't realize my husband and I were hosting. So I spent the early part of the day cleaning up. It was a fun first session though! Memorable too. Although, that's mostly because we rolled so poorly all night. We almost got killed by skeletons, and then again by a blizzard, and then again by some kobolds. None of those things should have been enough kill us. It was embarrassing for our characters how much they sucked at doing anything.
I'm also online slightly less than I normally am because I'm playing through Final Fantasy 10 for the first time. I really wanted to play a video game, and I bought FFXV because it's beautiful, but it was very overwhelming as someone who's only played 1 game from start to finish. So, I nixed that and I got FFX because I knew it was turn based and not and open world. I hate Blitzball and think there should be more save spheres, but overall I'm having fun.
So. That's pretty much what I'm doing with life right now. And on tumblr, or twitter, or any other social media I probably would have made that into a few separate posts because I like to compartmentalize. But the average post rate here seems much lower, and I didn't want to clog anyone's feed by making a bunch of posts in a row. But, if they were all separate posts I would be going into more detail about everything. So, lovely people that have subscribed to me. Would you prefer in the future short vague posts like this, and then starting a convo about anything you want more information about, or would you prefer I just do longer more specific posts from the jump?

Sorry about the silence!

I just realized that I posted a couple times a day for the first few days and then haven't posted anything for the past couple of days.
That'll be pretty typical though, because I work 10 hour shifts at work, and then I come home and spend time with my husband. So I don't do a lot of internet on work days. (Especially because I have no computer & very very limited phone access at work.)
I just thought I would say something so that people didn't think that I already abandoned this site or something.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: Have you ever experienced daja-vous? If so, how often do you experience it? Do you know why you experience it?

My answer: I experienced Deja Vu exactly once. I walked into the kitchen at my grandmothers house and she was doing the dishes, she turned to say hello to me and the plate that she was holding slipped from her hand and shattered on the floor. The entire scene felt like I was remembering just before it happened. I knew she was going to drop the plate right before she did. Like I had seen it in a dream. I was 6, so I was pretty sure I was psychic. Alas, I am not. It never happened again.

Heath "the Hunk" Jones

The last NPC day of the post about Bryce Rivers mentioned the General Manager Heath Jones, so let's learn a little more about him.

Heath the Hunk first got over in a tag team with Brian the Brain, they had a classic big man/little man dynamic. Though they were a pretty face-y team Brian's position as son of the owner meant that sometimes they benefited from some heel-like backstage maneuvering.
Though MGCW has a permanent set-up on the Las Vegas Strip for their weekly shows, the roster still travels every week to do various house shows and charity events. It was on the way back from one such even when the car Heath was driving was T-boned by a semi-truck. Brian lost his life, and Heath lost 2 years of his career to surgery rehab and physical therapy. Even after all of his hard work doctors were reluctant to clear someone who had undergone such severe head trauma to return to such a high concussion risk profession. So, MGCW management proposes an alternative: Old Man Rivers is looking for a Manager type character to take over on tv so that he can focus on creative.
This is how it plays out Kayfabe: Heath the Hunk is ready for his glorious return but Old Man Rivers blames Heath for Brian's death and wants him to suffer. Heath is given an opportunity make it through a gauntlet match and be reinstated. During the gauntlet match a heel character is upset at being submitted gives Heath a beat down before the next opponent takes position. Old Man Rivers sees Heath getting this beat-down, and realizes that this is his son's best friend, the man that was like a son to him, and he can't watch this anymore. Old Man Rivers intervenes calling of the match. After that Heath gives his retirement speech, and starts acting as an authority figure while Old Man Rivers retreats more and more.
By the time our players join the scene Heath has been the General Manager for several years. He's very good at being the kind of character that seems to be fighting for the people without ever doing anything substantial to help them. He's charming enough that the fans mostly accept him as a face however instead of thinking him snake-like and forcing the character more heel.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: Do you ever have a recurring dream? What is it and what do you think it means?

My answer: (whoops, I was trying to enter in the tags while I thought of my answer and hit the enter button and the whole thing posted. so sorry if you saw the empty answer version.)
A few years ago I used to have recurring dreams about being at a party in my apartment and one of my ex boyfriends from high school showing up as a plus 1 for a friend of mine. And I spend the whole dream trying to avoid my ex without offending the friend that brought him to the party. In real life these 2 people have never met, and I have never known my ex to be in the city I live in now. So, it's probably just a general anxiety about awkward social situations dream with the face that my brain knows will hit me the hardest?
Now I don't throw parties anymore so I don't really have that dream, and the closest thing I get to a recurring dream is that anytime I go to the mall in my dreams it's always the same dream mall. Which probably means that I like shopping, and I like the familiar.

[community profile] questionoftheday asks: How prepared would you say you are for a disaster? Say that the zombie apocalypse happened, what is your likelihood of surviving?

My answer: I live in a hotel, downtown, in a major metropolitan area, in the United States. If the Zombie Apocalypse happens I'm dead right away.
I would like to think I'm more prepared for other disasters though. Like my building has a Nuclear Fallout Shelter in the basement, and there are places to go in case of a tornado. Plus all standard fire safety stuff.
I guess a Pandemic would be an issue though, for the same reasons that the zombies would take me out. It's just hard when you live in such a heavily populated area.
Also, if we're counting zombies as a possibility we should also count hostile aliens. Which, might target more important cities first. So I probably wouldn't be instantly dead. And, I'm ready to throw down against aliens. I assume if they've made it here they have technology that far outstrips our own and it'll be a completely losing battle. But, mama didn't raise no bitch.

Bryce Rivers

I thought that a thing I could do here is make daily(/weekly?) posts about some of the npc's I've made for campaigns I created. And I thought the perfect starting point would be the first character I created for the first campaign I ever ran.
It was a World Wide Wrestling campaign, and the show we were playing was called Modern Gladiators Combat Wrestling. The drama that we opened the campaign with is that the owner and founder of MGCW Bruce Rivers (Old Man Rivers) died suddenly 3 months ago but for some reason legal red tape delayed the will reading until just last week (kayfabe) when it was read during a live airing episode of MGCW (kayfabe). During that live reading it was revealed that instead of leaving the company to the General Manager (and Presumed Heir) Heath "the Hunk" Jones Bruce left the company (and everything else) to his tv star grandson. Enter Bryce Rivers.

Bryce Rivers is the son of Brian "the Brain" Rivers (a wrestler who died tragically before his time) and Judi Darke (a washed up soap star). He began acting when he was young earning a role as the main characters younger brother on a show about teen witches. Most fans however would recognize him as 1 of the 2 leads of the hit tv show A.I.P.O. (Agency Investigating Paranormal Occurances.) About federal agents going under cover in high schools to solve supernatural crimes. Fans of A.I.P.O. are still reeling after his character's death during the season finale that aired 3 weeks ago.

The fun part of playing World Wide Wrestling is that you get to play the characters as who they are behind the scenes and who they are kayfabe (and you get to decide what parts of their character are both). So
Kayfabe:
Bryce Rivers is late if he even bothers to show up
When he does show up he doesn't show much interest/emotion to the things happening in front of him unless they are directed to him
He's out every night drinking and partying
He's very promiscuous
His reputation in Hollywood is that he's an unreliable diva
He's never been in a wrestling ring before
He has no respect for the wrestlers on his roster
Safety is less important than ratings
He's willing to do anything to maintain control of the show (even after saying that he would allow it to run without his interference)

Behind the scenes:
He's been training for years to wrestle because he always knew he wanted to be a part of the business
He has very little control in the day to day running of the business
The Hollywood rumors are very recent and were actually a ploy by his publicist to build up his heel persona before his character reveal in MGCW

Both:
He's small for a wrestler (cruiserweight)
He dresses like Harry Styles at a photoshoot
He's openly bisexual (The season/campaign ended with the reveal that he had been dating Heath the Hunk's son Chip the entire time)

First Post.

Hello!
I'm Michele, and I have come from tumblr.
To be very honest in the past I have been more of lurker than a contributor in online spaces so this is kind of intimidating for me! But, maybe this site/format will be what I need to start doing more original posts and interacting with people more.
I suppose I could have just started with that, but it seemed odd not to make an official "first post".
